Kitty Genovese.




 Catherine Susan "Kitty" Genovese, New York City resident stabbed to death near her home in the Kew Gardens neighbourhood of the borough of Queens in 1964.
The circumstances of her murder prompted investigation into the social psychological phenomenon that has become known as the bystander effect or "Genovese syndrome".

On a bizarre sidenote, Genovese's murder is also a pivotal event in Alan Moore's Watchmen.
